Homemade Dog Biscuits

Treats for National Dog Biscuit Day

Feb 18, 2007 Joy Butler

These homemade dog biscuits will help your dog celebrate National Dog Biscuit Day.

They say every dog has his day and Friday, February 23, 2007 must be it, because that is National Dog Biscuit Day. I was not able to find out the origin of this doggy holiday but many of us plan to observe it. Dogs will certainly enjoy celebrating with a box of milkbones but, for those who wish to take things a step further and add a personal touch, the recipes below can be made with your very own hands. Try one or both of these to put a wag in your dog’s tail.

Peanut Butter Pooch Cookies

21/2 cups whole wheat flour

¼ cup white flour

¼ cup oatmeal

11/4 Tbsp baking powder

1 Tbsp honey

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup milk

Combine flour, oatmeal, and baking powder. Combine milk, peanut butter, and honey in a separate bowl and mix well. Stir peanut butter mixture into flour/oatmeal mixture. Knead dough and roll-out on floured surface to a quarter inch thickness. Cut out treats using a cookie cutter. Place aluminum foil on cookie sheet and bake in a 400 degree oven for approximately 15 minutes.

Tail Waggers

3 Jars Baby Food – (1 carrot, 2 meat)

1/3 cup Wheat Germ

1/4 cup powdered milk

1/4 tsp garlic powder

Mix ingredients well and then press into small “patties”. Bake in 350 oven for about 15 minutes.

When you make it yourself, you know what goes into it. When cooking for your dog, always remember that chocolate and onions are dangerous for dogs to eat. Happy National Dog Biscuit Day!

Hi Everyone! I just found this site and think its wonderful! I have contimplated making my own dogfood for years, but since this recall ive realized that i have no choice, and im actually looking fwd to making EVERYTHING they eat from now on. I have found so many helpful ideas and recipes so im ready to satrt...My only question is HOW MUCH FOOD do i feed them ( when i was feeding them dry i would feed them 2 cups a day) which for my app. 60 pound dog with a high matabilism fit well, as well as for my 70 pound dog which is much more 'stout' /'stockier'..lets just say i have to 'watch his weight'..so they are app 60 & 70 poumds, i want to make sure i feed them what they need. Anybody have advice? I appreciate all advice. Thank you!Tara...Junior and JoeJoe

Just wandering if one article states that onions and garlic my be harmful to dog, should we really be putting garlic in the dog biscuit?
I have heard that dogs like garlic but never knew it could make them sick.
Thanks for your input. Jan

I have only been cooking for My Gal Sal since the recalls, but I'm confused as to how much to feed.

I would skip the garlic, as it's unsure as to whether or not its okay. Also, as for how much to feed, you theoretically should feed as much as your pooch wants. The idea is that if they get the right nutrition, they will stop eating when they are no longer hungry. Don't worry too much about how many cups, etc. If it's healthy food, (not too many unused carbs and grains) then your dog will know when it's full and it won't eat too much :)

Since baby food jars now come in so many sizes, what size baby food jar should be used for the recipe? Thanks!

I plan on making these dog biscuits as Christmas gifts for my friends that have dogs. This is a money saving idea, as I am sure we all should be watching our pennies these days.
