Homemade Pet Diapers for Medium to Large Dogs

Save Money on Female Dog Diapers or for Dog Incontinence

Apr 18, 2009 Lynn Pritchett

Pets can have health and sanitary issues making everyday life difficult. Homemade pet diapers can ease anxieties for owners and dogs.

Breeding female dogs go into seasonal heat, and sometimes pets just get sick and lose urinary control. Pet owners can be overwhelmed with emotions and potential veterinary cost over their furry friends' occasional issues with bodily fluids:

"My Beagle's old and had lost bladder control, but he's not in pain. What should I do?"

"I can't afford to get my Bull Dog spayed yet, and I can't afford to feed and vaccinate puppies."

"We cannot have these stinky puddles all over the house, but we love our Spaniel."

Some people might choose to abandon their pets. Others may simply follow the pet around for nauseating clean-up. Some will meet in the middle with quality of life for themselves and their pet.

Retail Disposable Pet Diapers are Expensive and Wasteful

One quick and easy solution is disposable diapers. However, baby disposable diapers have already proven to be a landfill problem, and pet disposable diapers just add to that predicament. They can also be up to three times the price of baby diapers per package. An example is Target store's pet disposable diaper brand, Simply Out, starting at about $9.99 for 18 count package. Baby disposables start at about 40 count diapers in a package for the same price.

Homemade Boxer Shorts Dog Diapers Save Money and the Environment

Reusable boxer shorts don't end up in the landfill after just one use. According to guests' experience posts at Thriftyfun.com from September 2008 through March 2009, various sizes of child boxer shorts and elastic legged underwear work well for medium to large dogs:

  • Large dogs, such as Great Danes and Rottweilers, fit medium to large size boy's boxer shorts.
  • Medium dogs, like Beagles, Poodles, Pit Bulls, Portuguese Water dogs, and Spaniels, fit well with small size boy's boxers.
  • If boxers do not have a front flap opening, then one must be cut for the dog's tail. Boxers are worn backward on dogs, with the front on the back for their comfort.
  • Disposable ladies' pantie liners may be placed inside the boxer crotch for absorbency and easy clean up.
  • Attach elastic, adjustable size child's suspenders to the boxers with the criss-cross across tummy to help hold boxers in place while dog is active.

Homemade Disposable Diapers are Sometimes Necessary

Sometimes dogs must go to the vet, or other trips in the kennel carrier are required. Rather than stressing out the pet, by making it lie in its own uncontrollable bodily fluids, disposable pet diapers can be an affordable alternative, without buying the expensive retail packages.

Medium and large dogs can easily fit in to disposable child's potty training underwear pants, like the brand Pull-ups. Depending on the dog's individual width and length, sizes range from small fitting the average Beagle for up to large fitting the average Great Dane.

A hole needs to be cut for the tail on the front of the disposable child potty training underwear pants. Remember that for the pet's comfort, items meant for humans to wear are worn backwards on dogs and cats. Masking tape is recommended to cover the open edging of the cut area to prevent leakage.

Homemade dog diapers decrease dog stress with less menstrual or bladder control accidents on the floor or furniture. Disabled pets can remain an active member of their family with a better quality of life.
