The Japanese Chin is a special breed which is considered a "toy" dog. They are dainty and small, averaging around seven pounds; they stand a little taller than most toys.

Japanese Chins originally came from Japan. These dogs are highly affectionate, friendly and alert. They require a lot of affection and attention and seek to always be by their owners. They make good lap dogs and are perfect for people who wish to have a dog on or with them at all times. They are also great around children as they do not tend to jump up on people or snap.

Maintenance and Care for the Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin’s coat is soft and long. They require daily brushing and do not need to be taken to the groomer’s on a regular basis. Their fur can be easily washed in the tub (this only needs to be done about three times a year) or they can be “dry cleaned” with a wet towel and not saturated. They tend to shed quite a lot but the shedding is manageable.

This breed of dog tends to have a very particular palate and is also prone to upset stomachs. It is best to keep their diet plain and simple, but consistent. A good diet might consist of a highly digestible dog food, plain chicken in water, and occasionally, some plain yogurt to cure the “gurgling” stomach that they tend to get when their diet has been altered or when they try something new.

Exercise and Play for the Japanese Chin

Exercise and walking are important for this breed of dog, but they do not have to be over walked as a larger dog might be. Definitely, play should be incorporated into their schedule, some running, rolling around, fetching favorite toys and so forth. It is a good idea to keep a basket of toys around so they can fetch them on their own when they want to play.

The Chin likes toys that are not too big for him. He tends to whine a little if given a bone that is too big to chew. The right size bone needs to be sought out and used from time to time and he will get used to it. It’s always a good idea to choose toys that do not have parts that will come off when chewed. A simple, plush toy with a squeaker inside is always appreciated by a Chin.

Ownership of a Japanese Chin

The investment of love and care that is made for this breed of dog is given back two fold. The Japanese Chin will be a tender caretaker for its owner and anyone in the household. A very sensitive dog, it will be receptive to its owner’s needs and feelings always. Good care followed with consistent love and attention will bring out the best with this choice of dog.
