More and more pet owners are looking for ways to feed their dog with cheap and nutritious home-made food, rather than using shop-bought pet food.

These days, with awareness of additives and fillers put into shop-bought food, it is more healthy and nutritious to create dog food in the comfort of the home rather than rely on dubious pet food bought from suppliers or pet stores. Even the most well-known and popular brands of dog meat and food have a high level of fillers such as wheat in them, which means a dog can be left hungry soon after being fed.

Home-made dog food has a number of benefits:

  • It enables the owner to see exactly what a pet is eating, with no hidden chemicals or additives
  • It is a cost-effective way of keeping a dog well-fed and satisfied
  • There is the option to use organic ingredients if required
  • It keeps well and the dog will infinitely prefer it to the shop-bought varieties
  • It is simple to make, convenient and much healthier than branded types of food.

This simple recipe can be adapted in many ways, but the ingredients are all cheap to buy and will make the dog healthy, happy and full of natural energy. It can also be supplemented with home made dog treats.

Ingredients for Home-Made Dog Food:

  • A large piece of liver, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon of Oregano
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 onoin, cut into small pieces
  • 1 small potato, diced (skin can be left on)

Preparation Method:

  1. Fry the liver until it is thoroughly cooked but not rubbery
  2. Stir in the Oregano
  3. Lightly boil the carrot, onion and potato until soft. Drain thoroughly
  4. Mix the liver, oats, carrot, onion and potato together until thoroughly combined.
  5. Store in an air-tight container until ready to serve to the dog. The mixture can be made even tastier by adding a couple of tablespoons of gravy (made from granules is fine).

This recipe is full of protein to give the dog added energy and help to condition the coat. Liver is packed with minerals and makes the perfect base for most dog foods. If preferred, substitute the liver for ground beef or any other meat.

Other Great Ways to Feed the Dog

Dogs usually eat most things, so cooking for one extra ‘person’ at dinner time is a good idea, particularly with meals such as the Sunday roast or vegetable-rich foods. Chop up all ingredients and combine with gravy for a tasty alternative to shop-bought foods.

Dogs will eat fish, meats, cheese, vegetables, and most carbohydrates. As long as the owner steers clear of fried or fatty foods, the dog will be healthy and happy with a shiny coat.

Drop in an essential fish oil capsule for an even more nutritious dinner.
