New Year’s Resolutions

Helping Pet Owners Take Better Care of Their Dogs

Jan 3, 2008 Joy Butler

We can't change the past but we can do something about the future. Consider these suggestions when making your New Year's resolutions.

The start of a brand new year, this changing of the calendar, this time of considering the future gives us opportunity to make resolutions to improve ourselves. As dog owners we may remember that our dog's world revolves around us and that we are responsible for his health and well-being. We may reflect on the past year and feel guilty that we did not spend enough time with our dogs or that we did not brush their teeth quite as often as we should have or that we skipped last year’s checkup with the veterinarian. Well, the month of January is the perfect time to resolve to do better. Following are twelve suggestions and reminders to help dog owners take better care of their pooches in the new year.

  1. I will help other dogs, less fortunate than mine, by donating supplies or cash or volunteering my time to a shelter.
  2. I will provide quality food and fresh water for my dog every day. I will limit special treats in order to keep my dog’s weight under control. I will remember that obesity increases my dog’s chances of cancer, heart problems, and other health issues.
  3. I will make sure that my dog has a comfortable place to sleep.
  4. I will make sure my dog is warm in winter and cool in summer.
  5. I will see that my dog’s vaccinations and preventatives are up to date. When he is sick, I will find time and finances to take him to the veterinarian. I will also make sure he gets an annual exam, even when he is not sick.
  6. I will regularly doggy proof my home and property so that my dog is safe from swimming pools, garbage, chemicals, toxic plants, etc.
  7. I will inspect gates and fences weekly to make sure they are secure. I will keep identification on my dog so that he will have a greater chance of returning home if he is lost.
  8. I will bathe and brush my dog regularly. I will also keep his nails clipped and his teeth brushed. This will keep him comfortable and protect his health while cutting down on shedding on the furniture.
  9. I will take my dog to obedience classes or brush up on what he has already learned. I will remember that dogs need to understand what is expected of them before they can behave properly. I will remember that dogs learn better with positive training and praise than with punishment.
  10. I will make sure all my dogs are spayed or neutered so that their cancer risk is reduced, they are less likely to wander, and will not add more puppies to a world where puppies and dogs are euthanized every day because there are not enough homes for them all.
  11. I will develop an emergency plan for my dog, in the event of an earthquake, fire, flood, storm, or other such disaster.
  12. I will spend at least a few minutes of happy time every day, exercising and playing with my dog. I vow to provide him with a new toy or treat at least monthly, because he deserves it!
