Preventatives for Ticks, Heartworms, and Other Parasites

Advantage, Frontline, K9 Advantix, and Promeris are just a few of the products that control parasites in dogs.

Fleas, ticks and other parasites are not only annoying, they transmit disease as well as cause anemia in some cases. In recent years a number of preventatives have been developed.

Advantage is applied topically each month on dogs at least 7 weeks old and cats at least 8 weeks old. It is water resistant and kills most fleas in 12 hours. It should not be used on pregnant or lactating dogs without first consulting a veterinarian.

Frontline is used on dogs and cats at least 8 weeks old. Available in topical or spray, it is waterproof and gets rid of fleas in 1 to 2 days. It also kills ticks and lice. Only the topical is approved for pregnant or lactating pets.

Sentinel is given orally with food each month to dogs at least 4 weeks old and weighing 2 pounds. This preventative is available by prescription and also kills hookworms, whipworms, roundworms, and heartworm larvae. It contains a flea sterilizer and although each ingredient is individually approved for use in pregnant or lactating dogs, the combination is not. Pets must have a negative heartworm test before use.

Frontline Plus includes a flea sterilizer. It is applied topically each month and may be used on dogs or cats 8 weeks old or pregnant or nursing pets. It is waterproof and works in 1 to 2 days killing fleas, ticks, and lice.

Revolution is applied topically each month by prescription for dogs at least 6 weeks old and in cats at least 8 weeks old, as well as pregnant and nursing pets. It is waterproof and fleas are gone within 42 hours. Used only in pets who test negative for heartworms, it also kills ticks, ear mites, sarcopsis, and heartworm larvae in dogs, and kills hookworms, roundworms, ear mites, and heartworm larvae in cats.

K9 Advantix is applied topically each month to dogs at least 7 weeks old and is not approved for use in pregnant or lactating females. It is water resistant and kills most fleas in 12 hours. It also controls ticks, flies, and mosquitoes.

Advantage Multi is a water resistant, monthly topical available by prescription for dogs at least 7 weeks old and weighing 3 pounds and cats at least 9 weeks old. It is not approved for pregnant or nursing pets. It kills fleas in 12 hours and also kills hookworms, whipworms, roundworms, and heartworm larvae in dogs. In cats, it also kills hookworms, roundworms, ear mites and heartworm larvae. Pets must be heartworm negative before use.

Vectra3D includes a flea sterilizer. Applied topically each month to dogs only who are at least 7 weeks old and 2.5 pounds, it kills most fleas in 6 hours and is waterproof. It also controls ticks, flies, and mosquitoes. It is not approved for use in pregnant or nursing females.

Comfortis is given monthly as a chewable to dogs who are at least 14 weeks old and 5 pounds. It kills most fleas within several hours. It is available by veterinary prescription and not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs or dogs with seizure disorders.

Promeris is applied topically, by prescription, every 4 to 6 weeks to dogs who are at least 8 weeks old to kill fleas and ticks. It is waterproof. It is not approved for use in pregnant or lactating pets and may interact with some other drugs. Promeris Feline is available for cats.

These products are more effective when used in conjunction with home and yard treatments.
