With dogs dying from commercially prepared food, it's difficult to know what to feed man's best friend. Why not try making your own?

The reports aren't just ominous, they're downright scary.

At least 471 cases of pet kidney failure have been reported in the days since a nationwide recall of dog and cat food and about a fifth of those pets have died, a veterinarians' information service told CNN on Tuesday.

As of March 31, Nestlé Purina PetCare Co. said it was recalling all sizes and varieties of its Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. Purina said a limited amount of the food contained a contaminated wheat gluten from China.

Now the recall is including dry dog food.

Testing by federal agencies has discovered that in some of the recalled commercial pet food that the wheat gluten that was used in production of these foods contained melamine, the chemical that is involved in the manufacture of plastic. It is considered to be a contaminant and byproduct of several pesticides, including cyromazine, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

What can you do when you have a dog at home who needs to eat but you're afraid to feed him from a can or a bag of dry dog food that may potentially kill your family's best friend?

The answer to that is easy. You make your own dog food.

Dr. Michael W. Fox is a veterinarian who is also a newspaper columnist and an advocate on behalf of all animals everywhere. He believes the best thing we can do to give our pets vitality and good health is to make their food at home in our own kitchens.

“Home-prepared foods for our animal companions, ideally with organic ingredients that were locally produced, are important,” he says on his website simply titled Dr. Michael W Fox.

“Then you know what your animal is being fed if a food-related health problem such as an allergy to a particular ingredient or digestive upset were to arise.”

Even moreso during a commercial recall, as we are currently experiencing.

Dr. Fox has given the recipe for homemade dog food which is chock full of nutrients and vitamins on his website for at least the last year. Those who have been using this recipe have nothing but glowing comments to make.

"My two dogs have been on 'the recipe' for the last six months and they love it, " Jim Schadremine, who lives in Norfolk, Virginia, said. "When the dog food recall started, I wasn't the least bit worried because I have been feeding them this homemade recipe all along. And when they go to the vet, I know exactly what they've been eating. It makes the vet's job a whole lot easier to identify any problems."

"I stopped buying commercial dog food about two months ago," Dan Webber in Minneapolis, Minnesota, said. "I was feeding my black lab Dr. Fox's recipe and while I felt bad for other dog owners who were still buying store brands, I knew my dog was in the clear."

The recipe is easy and doesn't require much more than a little shopping and cooking. You'll have a nice big batch of wholesome, nutritious dog food cooked up in less than 45 minutes if you follow Dr. Fox's recipe.

If you try Dr. Fox's homemade dog food recipe and your dog loves it, think about it:: you'll never have to worry about feeding your dog and making sure it's wholesome, healthy and safe again.
